Homegrown

I'm loving this garden business. The garden itself is a bit of a messy jungle but I'm enjoying our produce. We just started harvesting our tomatoes, Carmen and I decided to pick some of the larger tomatoes and let them ripen in the window to protect them from creatures and pests. They are absolutely delicious.

I was able to harvest only one large cucumber but it was incredibly fresh and crisp, yum. We have a couple baby cucumbers trying to make it, I hope they continue to grow. A few other beginning cukes didn't make it.

For some reason my pepper plants are not taking off. I got one small banana pepper from one plant but the other two have not grown much or produced anything. The pumpkin plant grew an impressive vine but no fruit yet. This is definitely a learning process for me and for the kids. I like that they get to see first hand how their food grows.

Holden Well Check

Holden had his 15 month check up today, at almost 17 months old. I waited a bit because the swine flu scare was at it's peak right when it was time to go, then he had a cold followed by hand foot and mouth virus. So now he is healthy and got a good report plus two shots.

Holden's Stats

Weight: 26 lb 12 oz (80%)
Height: 31 1/2 inches (60%)
Head circumference: 49 (90%)

He is also getting a slew of teeth at one time, two upper molars, his four lower front tooth and two bottom side teeth all at the same time. So, while generally his regular happy go lucky self he has been a bit crabby, understandably.

Holden's words:

Lace 'em Up!

David and I have been running regularly for almost six months now, typically 3 miles 4 times a week and most often the same hilly trail down Shoal Creek by our house. I was just thinking how I wanted to check out some alternate routes near our house as well as check out some fun runs when I got a flier for the first Taco Shack 5k to be held on July 11th. And conveniently the course starts literally three houses down from our house at the Ramsey Park sign.

And how nice they gave us the race route map which outlines a different 3.1 mile run. The next day David and I tried it out running with the kids. He completed the hilly course in about 10 minute miles (pushing 100 pounds of toddler plus the triple jogging stroller) and I completed my jog in 11 minute miles pushing one 30 pound toddler in a jogger. My goal is to do the same or better on race day.

It is motivating to have some sort of goal even though my bigger goal is just to be out jogging consistently. To 'train' I have added in a few longer runs, running 4 miles yesterday and generally trying to remember to pick up my pace. I've found that when running with a jogger it is really easy to slide into a slower pace and run more up and down then forward because you have to push a bit more.

Anyway, if you live here in Austin and want to join in you can sign up here.

Bedtime Mayhem

the mischief makers

I've been putting off writing about this topic because it exhausts me even to think of it.

Bedtime is a disaster. Before toddler beds it was easy breezy. Bath, book, bed, zip up the crib tents and say goodnight. Since we moved them to toddler beds in October our life has not been the same.

These days we put the kids to bed around 7:30pm each night but they don't end up going to sleep until around 9pm. The kids do not want to go to bed, or stay in bed. They would rather run, play, jump, screech and giggle. Remember slumber parties? Then you get the idea.

We have to repeatedly put them back in bed. It is maddening, and exhausting. Sometimes we leave the room for a bit to get our sanity back, but we can't leave them long before someones lovely is stolen which inevitably leads to someone getting injured followed by lots of crying.

I finally reached out to my triplet chat groups for advice and the responses were generally commiserating, everyone seems to be facing the same issues.

Here is our bedtime routine

1. Relaxing bath with lavender oil (splash party time)

2. 'Quiet' play time (books, toys, not so quiet)

We were doing this in their bedroom for wind down time but their room is large and they want to run and play chase and tackle so now we are trying to do quiet play in the upstairs playroom and when we move to bedroom it is straight to bed.

Less running, but still not working. We are also trying harder to avoid any TV in the afternoons and before bedtime. Although this is missed because we could get them to occasionally lie down and relax a bit.

3. Bedtime. Get into bed, sing calm bedtime songs, short back rubs and kisses. We have tried lots of things here including spending more time to get them calm, which often results in who ever is not getting attention to call out to be held. We've tried giving them water, enticing them with a special toy, and threatening them.

4. Back to bed. Spend the next hour or two putting them back in bed. This seems to be lots of fun for them. Here we try not to give them attention for negative behavior but they are pretty good at getting our attention. Some moms recommend leaving the room for 30 mins then returning to battle bedtime when they are more tired. This idea has merit but as I mentioned often their rowdy play leads to someone getting hurt. Also, I think they have figured out if someone is crying we will come back in so there is some incentive to see that this happens. Still we have to do this occasionally just so we don't go crazy.

One mom suggested giving the kids a book in bed, we may try this again. When they have a toy or book it can take longer to go to sleep but they may stay in their bed longer. This works better with Lily than the boys who are more eager to run around. Lily is less likely to get out of bed but will encourage the boys to get out by calling out to them. And occasionally she joins in.

A couple moms questioned our naps. During the week when Carmen is here they get solid naps, probably too late and too long. We put them down a bit earlier today. I'm not ready to give up naps and it doesn't seem to help too much on the weekends when they don't nap.

And well Holden, that is another story. He sleeps great but is still sleeping with me. David converted his bed to a toddler bed last night and I pushed a twin bed up to it to transition him there. We will work on this and getting him to sleep alone for nap times as our first step. Although today didn't work out so well.

Let me know if you have any other ideas for us.

Are We Nuts?!

Early this morning David and I were debating how to spend our day. Should we go to church? Which really means that I help out with our kids Sunday School class while David goes to service. Should we go jogging to Central Market and let the kids play on the playground and feed the ducks? Lily piped up and said, "I want to go to Sea World Daddy!" We looked at each other, shrugged, and said 'OK'. Less than an hour later we were all packed up and in the car on the way to San Antonio.

It was certainly a full day but David and I agreed that it was not much more challenging than keeping all four entertained and happy at home all day. The kind man at the stroller return desk even graciously escorted us out to our car so we wouldn't have to coax our four tired toddlers all the way out of the park and through the parking lot on foot. And as a bonus they got a solid nap in on the way home. Peace and quiet, well deserved.

Sea World Revisited

This time we checked the Sea World hours of operation before heading to San Antonio, and we were pleased to find, unlike our first trip, that the park was open. We had a wonderful day.

The kids enjoyed the beluga whale and acrobat show. They must have been waiting for something about to happen in this photo because after each jump and dive they would clap wildly and memo would say 'my turn, my turn'.

Got Toxic Sunscreen? We Did.

Yesterday I visited the dermatologist, first time in over four years. She reviewed my skin care regime (pretty basic, Cetaphil cleanser followed by Oil of Olay with sunscreen) and made a few recommendations. But more importantly she got me up to speed on sunscreen.

She told me that sunscreen is not regulated by the FDA and that they have failed to create mandatory safety standards to protect our health. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) did some independent testing and discovered that numerous sunscreens either are not nearly as effective as claimed (not really SPF 15 etc) or worse contain the toxic chemicals Oxybenzone or Benzophenone-3 which when absorbed by the skin can cause allergies and hormone problems.

Their findings state that 'of nearly 1,000 name brand sunscreens, only 1 of 5 provided adequate protection from both UVA & UVB radiation with few ingredients link to known or suspected health hazards'. In fact EWG states that fewer than 5% of Coppertone, Neutrogena and Banana Boat products are recommended as safe and effective. Are you as shocked as I am?

I went through our sunscreen stash and found that all but one of our sunscreens contained these offending chemicals, even the 'name brand' sunscreens as the EWG states. See the bad guys above. Banana Boat Baby was our lone toxin free sunscreen but is it effective?

Now that I am aware I want to share the information. Dr. Dano gave me a handout with the Top 10 Sunscreen recommendations by the EWG that I transcribed for you below.

TOP 10 SUNSCREENS
1. Blue Lizard (anything without oxybenzone)
2. California Baby (anything with SPF 30+)
3. CVS with zinc oxide
4. Jason Natural Cosmetics Sunbrellas Mineral Based Sunblock
5. Kiss My Face "Parabin Free" series
6. Neutrogena Sensitive Skin Sunblock
7. Olay Defense Daily UV Moisturizer (with zinc)
8. SkinCeuticals Physical UV Defense
9. Solar Sense Clear Zinc for Face
10. Walgreens Zinc Oxide for Face, Nose & Ears

BUY
  • SPF 30 or higher for best protection
  • At least 7% zinc oxide or titanium dioxide for broad spectrum protection
This news comes to me right on the heels of finishing the book 'The Unhealthy Truth' by Robyn O'Brian (also recommended by a dermatologist slash friend, Dr. Renee Synder) which uncovers the failings of the FDA to protect our food supply and details the disturbing ties between the FDA and large food corporations and subsequent sketchy approvals. So you can guess that I am less than enchanted with our government right now.

Grab Robyn's book if you have a chance. Or check back as I'll be posting more on her book later, with a summary of commons foods and additives that many prominent scientist and other government agencies consider unsafe as well as a few ideas from the author on how we can make small improvements in what we feed our children and reap big benefits.

**Update**

I just checked out the EWG website and looked up the safety of several products I use regularly.
  • Cetaphil facial cleanser had a 7 high hazard level rating(on a scale from 1 to 10). And the packaging says 'Mild enough to cleanse a baby's delicate skin'
  • Purpose cleanser (recommended by my Dr as a replacement to Cetaphil) had a 4 or moderate hazard level rating.
  • Oil of Olay complete all day moisture lotion had a 4 or moderate hazard level rating.

Shaggy

My shaggy boys got hair cuts today. I try to stretch the hair cuts to every two months, but Will's probably should be cut every month it grows so quickly. His bangs were about to cover his eyes. Carmen has been gently reminding me for a few weeks now.

Two handsome boys enjoying their after haircut cookie treat.

Stitches

Lily took a tumble today at the playground and split her chin open on the steps of the play scape. Our ER visit was quite an ordeal, she was terrified and would not cooperate. They came very close to putting her under but in the end gave her some sedation and held her down for her four stitches. Daddy arrived just in time for the gory part, if he was ever a bit squeamish he has certainly gotten over that through being a dad. He was very brave and helped Lily stay as calm as possible. Our nurse confessed that he was exhausted after our visit.

It was a decent sized gash and pretty deep, just under her chin.

Afterwards we treated her to yogurt with mom and dad and all the toppings she wanted - chocolate with M and M's, chocolate chips and heath bar crunch, nice choice.

Lazy Days of Summer

Yes, I've been going a little nuts with my new Flip video camera that David got me for mother's day.

**Swim Update**

It is official, we have three new swim lovers. We took them to their grandparent's pool yesterday and they all were eager to swim. Surprisingly, Evan, who was still a little reluctant on the last day of class, was the most eager and could not get enough. He even jumped in the pool to swim to us a few times on his own. We had to force him to take breaks and rest because he just didn't want to stop swimming.

Swim Graduates!

We have three swim champs!

Today was the last day of class and Gwen had us get in the pool with the kids. Having David and I in the pool gave them a lot of confidence.

Will was eager to get swimming today and couldn't get enough.

Lily was a bit reluctant but eventually eased over to the pool and was interested. There was still a bit of fear but she was having fun and doing great.

Evan had to be cornered to get in the pool. More tears today but halfway through his class he started enjoying himself and in between sobs wanted more swims. He even jumped in the pool on his own accord a few times.

Even Holden had a go, Gwen says he is definitely ready to swim, he was kicking and pushing through the water.

Big Boy Swimmer

Lily and Evan had another rough swim lesson day. Evan swam well but was was fighting it. Lily was particularly unhappy and tired as she isn't feeling well.

The kids watched Will's swim video before class and I think that gave Will an extra boost of confidence. He turned the corner today and was actually enjoying himself. He was very proud, we were too. Look at him go...he has a cute scoot to his swim but is able to power through and propel through the water.

Not that Will's day was seamless, he had a pretty bad fall when attempting to jump in the pool and turn at the same time. It took him a little bit of time to get the courage to jump back in the pool by himself but he eventually did get back on that horse.

Sink or Swim

Evan swimming to Gwen. She says he has a swimmer's body.

Lily floating on her own.

Will swiming to grab rings on the steps which he found exciting and terrifying at the same time.

We started a week long intensive swim lesson course this week for the trips with Gwen Hurst. It has been traumatic for everyone, lots of tears and everyone has vomited copious amounts of water. But we have persisted, here we are having completed the third day and everyone is already swimming on their own. Today was particularly rough because she had them jump (or rather pulled them) into the pool from the side and they had to come up and swim to the side and pull themselves out all on their own. They all did it successfully.

Not all are happy about it. They have all told me that they don't want to swim, 'it is too scarey mommy.' As you can see in our videos, Evan is still terrified but swimming well, probably the best of the three. Lily was all nerves holding her tummy saying it hurt today before class but is doing well. Will switched over from terrified to being scared but having a little pride of success today. He told me 'mommy, take my picture', in between yelps.

I can't say I love this method, but all the parents I have talked to say by the last day the kids are swimming and happy and the parents are glad they stuck it out. Our kids are all climbers and our neighbors have a pool so I do feel some urgency to get them at a basic survival skill level of swimming as soon as possible. Also, our park pool opens this weekend and it will be a lot more fun for them and us if they have some swim skills. Although I found out today that Carmen doesn't know how to swim. I may be signing her up next...

Learning to Swim

This week the kids began a week-long swimming bootcamp that would make Dick Chaney proud. Day 1 sounded like waterboard torture. Now at Day 3 they are starting to make waves.

Mile high

Holden takes his time adjusting to the Denver altitude.

The rest of the crew gets its ice cream on back in the ATX. Just like Bill Cosby -- daddy's great, givin' us chocolate cake.

Hey dad, ever hear of a thing called "a bib"?

Jennifer and Holden visit Julie

Holden is becoming quite the good traveler. He slept the entire flight to Denver.

David is home alone with Will, Evan, and Lily for a couple of days. All going well so far!

Paradise Found

Yes, we are back. I'm way behind on my blogging. But we had a wonderful time and didn't go a moment too soon as now travel to Mexico is strongly discouraged due to the swine flu. That on top of the drug war violence must be tragic for all those who depend on the tourist industry.

Tulum is a jem a bit off the beaten path, with everything you would expect in a paradise, white sandy beaches, crystal clear ocean and beach huts steps from the water's edge. Maya Tulum where we stayed was particularly tranquil as it is a wellness and yoga retreat.

We were able to unwind and spend a few leisurely days. Now we are back home going full speed. I'm trying to type this while making breakfast and distracting the kids from pulling everything out of the kitchen cabinets.

Late night at Toys R Us

While the cat's away the mice will play. David had a business dinner last night and at bedtime my mom and I decided on a whim to take the kids to Toys R Us. They each were allowed to select one toy of their choice. Will knew right away that he wanted the 'Cars' Lightening McQueen Semi. But we were there until closing as Evan, Lily & Holden perused all the isles. The whole time Will held on tightly to his toy not swayed by other trucks or toys.

In the end Evan and Holden also selected a 'Cars' semi. Lily passed up rows and rows of pink stuff, including a six pair set of princess shoes ultimately for a 'Dora the Explorer' vehicle set, including a much coveted helicopter.
